The site has been secured at 150 Commerce Street and will welcome children of ages.
General Manager of the museum Leigh Winslett explains that it will be a science based museum. “Montgomery already has wonderful exhibits with ARTWORKS, and the Rosa Parks Children’s Wing. The Children’s Museum of Alabama will fill a void that has been left in Montgomery and be geared towards science with three distinct areas: Land and Water in Alabama, the Human Body and How Things Work,” says Winslett.
“One of the things we have done is to get involved with the teacher’s early on and ask for their input. We have discovered that teachers want a hands-on experience of how the body works,” says Winslett. “Kids are so stimulated by technology with iPods and game systems; we found that teachers are looking for creative ways to teach.” The Children’s Museum of Alabama will offer hands-on exhibits in each of its three areas.
The design of the museum’s exhibits will be based on life experiences – meaning that any age group will be able to enjoy the exhibit. From a preschooler simply playing, or a 10-year old understanding how the human body works through an interactive console, each visitor will have a different experience each time they come to the museum.
